For what is more versatile? As at home in tin as it is in Limoges, coffee can energize the industrious at dawn, calm the reflective at noon, or raise the spirits of the beleagured in the middle of the night.

Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov

It’s a gentleman’s duty to paraphrase a good coffee quote when he finds one.

Now on with the days business my friend. This book has captured the life of Count Alexander Rostov confined for life in the Metropol hotel in moscow as Russia is passing through various phases. We find a man who is forced to be frozen in time while everything around him is constantly changing. Of course it takes a toll on him of course he decided to end his life but life always finds a way at the end you get a feeling that here is a man who never regretted the way his life turned out.

Who would have imagined,” he said, “when you were sentenced to life in the Metropol all those years ago, that you had just become the luckiest man in all of Russia.

That is exactly the feeling I was left with at the end of the book. What could I possibly write that has already been not written on this book, But I will like to put in a few words myself.

Let’s talk about the book a bit. You almost instantly fall for the little quips by the count that fills the pages and almost never get bored of looking for it. At one time it almost becomes like a treasure hunt

A king fortifies himself with a castle, observed the Count, a gentleman with a desk.

The book is filled with happy characters more or less except for one. But his transformation from a rumbling bumbling baboon to a snith and onto a bully is also something worth reading.

At more than 450 pages it did felt cumbersome but it was bearable given you feel good in the company of such great characters

All in all its a great book. A must read.

P. S. I read the book and not the e-book and turning pages felt nice after so long. But the next one is back in electronic format.
